Classification of schizophrenia

Subtypes of schizophrenia have been acknowledged by both DSM-IV and ICD-10. The ICD-10 criteria classifies schizophrenia based on the prominent symptoms of the individual on presentation (Figure 5).

The DSM-IV classification of schizophrenia is similar to the ICD-10 criteria. It consists of five subtypes which include paranoid, disorganised (which is termed hebephrenic schizophrenia in ICD-10) catatonic, undifferentiated and residual schizophrenia.
