The Role of a Pharmacist

Patients with schizophrenia require long-term treatment to prevent relapse. One of the major challenges faced by pharmacists with this patient group is poor adherence to medication which could be a result from adverse drug reactions or lack of insight. Despite advancement in pharmacological treatment for schizophrenia through the use of atypical antipsychotics, side effects such as significant weight gain and metabolic syndrome can have just as much of a negative impact on the quality of life of a patient as typical antipsychotics. Side effects can be highly upsetting, stigmatising and stressful and may contribute to the lack of adherence to medication and consequently result in patients being repeatedly admitted to hospital.

Pharmacists being one of the most accessible healthcare professionals can help to improve patient outcomes by:
• Improving the patients understanding of the therapy
• Emphasising the benefits and importance of medication adherence
• Advising not to discontinue medication
• Educate patients about the potential side effects that can result from antipsychotic drugs.
• Advising patients to report any side effects to their primary healthcare provider
• Identifying potential contraindications or drug interactions
• Recommending a variety of strategies to increase adherence to prescribed medication such as the use of medication reminder devices
• Ensuring that patients with schizophrenia and their carer’s are well informed about the support available to them with regards to work or education, housing options, entitlement to benefits, and entitlement to drive.
• Encouraging patients to maintain routine visits to their primary healthcare provider
• Advising patients to avoid having alcohol
• Promoting and providing smoking cessation strategies such as nicotine replacement therapy
• Promoting a healthier lifestyle i.e., diet and exercising as the risk of cardiovascular disease is greater in patients with schizophrenia than the general population
• Monitoring of physical health parameters (such as weight and blood glucose)
• Building a trusting, respectful, non–judgemental relationship in an atmosphere of hope and optimism.

• Most importantly showing empathy, providing support and encouragement
